DENVER FOR THE WORKERS, NOT THE UltrA Rich

This campaign is about more than a single election – we need a complete reconstruction of society. We are building a socialist movement to end the rule of the billionaires once and for all.

Why Denver Needs Socialism

Capitalist politicians and developers are gutting many of our historic neighborhoods and destroying our ability to build dignified lives in the town we love. We know this is especially true in District 9: historically Black and brown neighborhoods like Five Points and GES have been heavily gentrified for decades. Every year, more and more people are displaced from the communities they grew up in. Across Denver, teachers can't afford to live in the city where they teach. In fact, only about 29% of rental units in Denver are considered affordable for teachers, making our city one of the most challenging metropolitan areas in the nation for educators to live near their schools. As if that’s not enough, a recent report from the City Department of Public Health reveals that 1 in 3 adults in Denver are skipping meals in order to pay their bills. There’s an affordability crisis in Denver, and that crisis is capitalism.

Politicians always seem to have an endless slush fund for police, mass surveillance and big developers, but never enough to meet our needs as working people. Just look at the multi-million dollar tax break the mayor tried to give CoreSite to build their new Data Center in the Elyria neighborhood, or the $1.6 billion the city of Denver has committed to the billionaire-run National Western Center. Why do corporations get government assistance while working people are left to skip meals in order to afford rent? Enough is enough! Denverites shouldn’t have to worry about skyrocketing electricity bills to pay for data centers (that we didn’t ask for) being built in our communities. We shouldn’t have to skip meals to be able to pay bills. We should be able to grow old in the neighborhoods we love.

Instead of trying to just survive each day, we deserve to be thriving as the workers who create the wealth of Denver! That’s why our campaign is fighting for socialism — a system where working class people have the political power to create a planned economy to meet the needs of people and the planet. Part of a national movement, our socialist program is rooted in the fact that this is possible; we just have to organize and fight for it!  And we're starting right here in District 9.

WHY WE NEED TO BUILD A SOCIALIST MOVEMENT

Every issue dealt with in this platform — and every injustice working people experience in society — boils down to the question of who has power. Under the current capitalist system, a tiny handful of ultra-wealthy developers, bankers, and corporate executives have all the power and will do anything to maintain it. We stand for socialism — a system where poor and working people hold political and economic power and use it to meet the needs of all people and to preserve the planet. Our problems could be solved by measures that are common sense to any worker, but are unthinkable under the rule of the billionaires.

AI and data centers, climate change, mass surveillance, and the housing crisis all pose an existential threat to the people of Denver. The capitalist government has no answers to these crises and is in fact driving them forward, acting as a servant for corporations, developers and Big Tech. They can’t steer us away from crises — they are part of them. Even so-called "progressive" politicians tell us that nothing can be done, that this is just the way things work. That’s a lie. The resources exist to resolve the problems humanity faces. The only thing standing in the way are the ultra-rich people who generate super-profits from the exploitation of workers all over the globe, and the politicians who do their bidding.

Instead of a tiny clique of ultra-rich people and hedge funds running and deciding everything, the diverse working class needs to control the commanding heights of the economy and come up with long-term plans to get out of the mess they created.
